Haddie Askew Shelton was born on May 6, 1946, in Beatrice, Alabama to the late Reverend William H. and Dora L. Askew. She was the fourth child of eight siblings of whom two preceded her in death, Mrs. Rosie Askew Edwards and Dr. Edward Louis Askew LL.B.,J.D.
Haddie was precious, and touched many lives as a teacher, motivator, cheerleader, and many more positive roles in all our lives.
Haddie professed her life to Christ at an early age and joined Sylvester Baptist Church and attended Savannah Baptist in Beatrice, Alabama. Haddie kept her faith in Christ throughout her life, and she was active in the following churches: Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Vilula Missionary Baptist Church, and Alabama Avenue Church of God until her passing.
Haddie attended schools in the Monroe County School System in Beatrice, Alabama. Haddie graduated from MCTS presently known as J F Shields High School. After high school she achieved higher education in Alabama from the following schools: an associate degree from Selma University in Selma, Bachelor of Arts degree from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Master of Arts degree and an education specialist Degree from Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, and attended AUM in Montgomery, Alabama.
Haddie belongs to the following organizations: Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, and Order of The Eastern Star. In her profession as a teacher and counselor, she instructed in the following schools in Alabama: MCTS presently known as JF Shields High School, Selma University, Concordia College, and several other schools in Escambia County, Monroe County, and Perry County School Districts. Also, she was a devoted educator and counselor who encouraged, motivated, and inspired her students to be successful in life with a sweet voice and loving smile.
Haddie married Reverend George Shelton Sr (Th.D.), June 24, 1972, and one child was born from this union. A son George Shelton Jr M.D., Haddie was a devoted loving wife and mother.
At 78 years of age, she passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Vaughn Regional Medical Center Hospital in Selma, Alabama. She leaves loving memories to be cherish by husband Reverend George Shelton Sr.(Th.D..) of Selma AL, Son George Shelton Jr (M.D.) and Daughter-in-law Toye Shelton and granddaughter Jessica Shelton Huston TX, three brothers Israel (Vergia) Vance AL, Willie D Askew (M.D.), (Judy) Maylene AL, Shed Askew (Kelly) Huntsville AL, two sisters Methard Askew Woody (P.H.D.), Selma AL, Josephine Askew Taylor (Earnest) Madison AL, two brothers-in-law William Edward Sr GA, Eddie Lee (Rita) Shelton Germany, and four sisters-in-law Laverne Askew Huntsville AL, Dorothy Mixon and Elnora Shelton Selma AL, and Nettie Shelton Riddick Highland Park, MI. Also, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
The homegoing celebration for Mrs. Shelton will take place Saturday, September 21, 2024 11AM at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will immediately follow in Serenity Memorial Gardens. The compassionate management and staff at Ashley's JH Williams & Sons Funeral Home extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to the entire Shelton-Askew families.
