With gentle grace and a giving spirit, Michelle Yvette Jones Mitchell lived a life rooted in care, family, and strength. Born on July 21, 1972, in Selma, Alabama, to Mamie Ross Jones and Arthur Lee Jones, Michelle was a steady light to everyone who had the blessing of knowing her.
She was a proud graduate of Selma High School, Class of 1991, where she was actively involved in the Student Government Association and played clarinet in both the Mighty Marching Saints Band and the Selma High Honor Band. She continued her education at Auburn University Montgomery before transferring to Wallace Community College Selma, where she earned her nursing license, an achievement that marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to serving others.
Michelle married her best friend, Michael Mitchell, in 1993, and together they built a loving home filled with devotion, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they had two children, Mykiria Alexis and Michael Jr, both of whom she loved, nurtured and protected with all her heart.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse, Michelle worked tirelessly for more than three decades, caring for patients at Vaughn Regional Medical Center in Selma, Baptist South and Crown Healthcare in Montgomery, and many other healthcare facilities throughout Alabama. Her compassion, patience, and dedication left a lasting impression on the countless lives she touched.
Michelle was also a proud member of the Order of Eastern Stars, and she carried that sense of sisterhood and community into every area of her life. She had a fondness for fashion and fun, but her love for travel brought her the most joy. Whether visiting the beaches of Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, or exploring new places with family and friends, Michelle found joy in the experience of discovering something new abroad.
More than anything, Michelle cherished her family. She was a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, a dependable sister, and a beloved aunt.
On July 15, 2025, Michelle passed away peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Even in her final days, she remained surrounded by love and supported by those she had poured so much of herself into.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mamie and Arthur Jones, and her grandmothers, Willie Mae Ross and Willie Mae Jones. Her memory is held close by her husband of 32 years, Michael Mitchell; her daughter, Mykiria; her son, Michael Jr.; her stepmother, Barbara Ann; her sisters, Carletta Denise and Tracy; her aunts, Eva Jean, Carolyn, and Amie; her uncle, Ricky; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Among them are Jasmine and Arthur Joelle, whom she helped raise as her own, her goddaughter Lynderakia, her nephew Harvey, who helped save Michelle’s life after a serious car accident, and her close friends Josephine, Jennifer, Tammy, and Tawan, who stood by her side with love and strength throughout her illness.
The celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Greater Mt. Calvary AME Church. Interment will immediately follow at Millers Memorial Gardens. The compassionate staff and management at Ashley's JH Williams extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the entire Mitchell, Jones and Sheppard families.
